I watched APPOCALYPSE NOW REDUX the other day and I’m curious.

In the first run of the film, in the scene where the crew of the American boat stops that Vietnamese boat to search it for VC support materials...did Captain Willard shoot that wounded Vietnamese woman?

I don’t remember him doing that.

This old Francis Ford Coppola classic is being released again as a Director's Cut version, with all kinds of additional material that ended up on the cutting room floor, the first time around.

I haven't seen it yet either but I remember seeing the original.

quite a symbolic scene that one.

the gun boat commander, looking for diversions
brought horror to the innocents.

Just a little factoid. Lawrence Fishbourne was only 15 years old when he was in that movie.

The scene...left in...changes the tone of the film completely. That was a deliberately brutal act...made personal by Willard pointing his pistol at her head and killing her. Not in secret. Not in the dark. Not in the heat of battle.

You could argue she was going to die anyhow. They couldn’t stop to help her.

Not being in the original release...the film is softer. Less harsh. Simple war and indifferent killing. No personal edge.

This film probably couldn’t release with that scene...at that time. Of course now we know our “honorable” guys got a little frisky with the ordinance at times.

Same thing in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. That German guy they release who returns to work the squad over in the final battle. Some guys are just built and wired for combat.

you're so right jar jar bc, the movie has a different feel now, its brutal but seems to make more sense.

what was that quote. ....'the irony about cutting them in half with a machine gun and then sticking a band aid on them."
