Since the Philippines has a strong relation with China at the time of CTHD, the Chinese has been wielding a strong influence on Filipino culture that would endure the American and Japanese occupation. Then until now, Filipinos would munch on noodles and dumplings, and they would call elder siblings 'ate' or 'kuya' (much like 'gege' or 'meimei' in Mandarin). And, of course, that predilection for Jacky Chan and kung fu or shaolin movies. This explains why CTHD has enjoyed success in the Philippines.

I'm not sure why it's defined as "Filipino" or "Filipina" instead of "Philipino". Maybe the same for "Pinoy" and "Pinay", because it's a guy/girl term? I need to catch up with the Filipino study, hehe. My favorite Filipino food siopao was influenced by the Chinese, that's all I know :D It's called Bao.

Joy got it right...except on one point. It was the 1899 Treaty of Paris, not the 15th century Treaty of Tordesillas. However, the 'Philippines' or 'the Philippine Islands' was already in use by the early years of the 19th century.

As for 'Pinoy/Pinay'...well, it has something to do with how Pinoys (like me) give nicknames. It's a hangover from the colonial times when a woman named Trinidad would be named 'Trining' and a man named Benigno would be called 'Ninoy' (got it? :cool:). Nowadays, people just call each other nicknames English/American-style.

zzb: 'Siopao' is still Chinese, as far as I can remember, because in Manila most Chinese businessmen speak Fookienese, not Mandarin. :D

Ah, I just turned 19 on Sunday! Hehe, that was Father's Day too. I had LOTS of fun on the weekend, showing my cousin this huge shopping mall (he loves it), going out with friends to lunch at a restaurant (they also brew beer but I wasn't going for that, haha), and just having people I care about there. I just found out that a friend of mine is in Beijing! It's the afternoon over there and he told me that he saw Michelle Yeoh there! And what shocked me more is that he went to Hong Kong and saw our dear Zhang Ziyi walk out of a movie theater! She was about to get into her limo and there was a huge crowd nearby! I don't think he brought in a camera but if he did I'd definitely post it here. Darn, I want to go to Hong Kong but just not now :(

It's hot over here in Los Angeles. I'm glad I don't tan easily. I don't get why people like to be tanned instead of in their own skin.

Recuperating from a laceration near his right eye. It has stitches, he had a portion of it removed but the vet will remove them next week. The cone around his neck prevents him from scratching at his stitches. He was given two medications, one for his eyes and an oral medication. He's feeling better! He's still full of life and very energetic too. He'll be neutered as soon as the stitches and cone come off.

As for me, I'm going on a road trip to Sacramento/San Francisco from the 14th-17th! I'll take some pics with my disposible digital camera I saved up two months ago. You Zhangsters must be all caught up with Ziyi's movies and promos :D Hope you all are doing well.

My sister was so mad she wanted to kill the stray :eek: Duncan is feeling much better and he's used to the cone around his neck.

It looked pretty graphic to me when I first saw the wound (before Duncan had those stitches). When he grows up into an adult cat, he'll scratch and bite and he'll probably fly :laugh: Oh yeah, the part about the neutering, he needs that. There are too many animals here and I don't think my sister wants little Duncans, or a mate for him.

I don't think they taught us that at Wushu school, but I had a feeling they might. There aren't enough women in Wushu, especially in the classes I've been going to, the number of students decrease every other time I go there, it's like people don't want to learn and get a workout. I do think women should be motivated enough to get into a competitive sport like Wushu. It will make them feel good about themselves.

As for me BC, I do believe that I can wear ties or business suits and make men intimidated by my appearance :bigwink: I just looked at the "Danger Girl" picture you made and it reminded me of how much of a baddy I can be, or how much I enjoy life. Practicing Wushu is one of my favorite things to do.

I'll be tested on my Wushu skills very soon. I can't believe I've learned so much in 6 months of training.

Oh... BC, I decided to make the photo link of my website to the photoshare site, since I upload my new pictures there. I was in San Fran because of some family matters, and also to have fun. I don't have a webcam :( I don't think I'll be having one for a while.

That raven Queen costume is all made-up. My friend had a mask with black feathers and a beak :D No one thought I was O-Ren Ishii except my two friends, haha. Some guy thought I was just a Japanese girl and he was making kung fu gestures. The nerve :laugh: I think people noticed the sword on my back and then recognized who I was on Halloween. I had to walk in those zori shoes too, it was pretty tiring and my feet were getting used to it :(

Yes I had a plastic katana. Another friend of mine let me take a picture with his display samurai sword. It was made out of cheap metal, but I'm sure it could chop heads if I swung it really hard :D My friend looked pretty but she had these platform shoes on. Those feathers on her jacket were "molting".

A plastic sword swung real hard could hurt someone yeah, but it just can't measure up to Japanese steel. ;-)

Speaking of fake swords, I was in one of those knife & cutlery stores awhile back where they have sword replicas from various movies & TV shows(LOTR,Highlander, CTHD, etc)and I asked if they had a Green Destiny. The guy said "Sure" and went and got it, A plastic blade with length and width of blade that did not match the real sword. What was at least if not more disappointing than that was that the blade didn't have the high polished shine or that cool little sound effect that both the Green Destiny and The Bride's(KB) sword made when being pulled out of its sheath. That high pitched ssssschwiiiiiiiiinnnnggg sound.

Well I do have a Green Destiny replica but it's a decorative sword, a nice addition to my so-called sword collection. If you tap it just right, I think it does make that movie sword sound. It amazed me when I did that :cool: I tried looking for plastic replicas, couldn't find a thing (maybe those LOTR swords, which look great on display). The Bride's sword is very nice, especially with that lion etched into it.

of my swords, the one with the most dramatic sound is one of my combat standard broadswords, most interesting because its one of a matched pair, the other doesn't have that "movie" sound.

I used have a very old katana, which i gave as a gift of respect to an individual i felt deserved it and could give it due care and appreciation.

I always thought was an eerie sound and feel, for the only sounds it made were light blowing wind, and on contact with other weapons made a thud.

My green dragon sword ( basic model of green destiny ) makes unintimidating flop and blang, i can do all the CYF moves, can't get the tone.

Yes it did have English subtitles :) I don't think it was a bootleg, I think it came directly from Hong Kong. I checked when I got it in the mail, it had three Hong Kong stamps and Chinese writing in the back of the envelope. It was also tied shut with string and tape.

I was raised Roman-Catholic too and went through a little agnostic stage. I guess it was more against my parents then against the faith now that I look back.

I'm not against the Catholic faith. Maybe this is a phase. My mother used to tell me bad things about church before/after I had even attended. Later on I found out my great grandfather (on my mother's side) was a minister and that's why she had practiced so many religious things in her life. She even made up prayers; I thought that was ridiculous because it was not apart of any prayer book whatsoever. I also thought of being Buddhist after that. My b/f is Buddhist and I asked him about the religion. He just tells me that his father goes to the temple to pray. I have thought of taking Buddhist prayer into consideration; for now I am just agnostic.

I think my new vid has good sound this time. I think I mumbled two words or more :blush: I was trying to sound loud and clear when cars were passing by my neighborhood, I guess it didn't work so I boosted the volume up a bit :D

Hi BC, I couldn't convert the file to a .mov but I did convert it to a .mpeg so Quicktime can read the file. The only thing is... it's 45 megs and it won't fit in my website. I'll get a compressor if you'd like but for now it's a huge file. Hope that answers your question :D
