View Full Version : CTHD showing on FOX

CTHD is going to be playing on Fox on Sunday night. FOX viewers are so not the audience that would be watching foreign films. I wonder if they're gonna go with the English dub...:worry: They better not have replaced a perfectly good night of the Simpsons with a dubbed CTHD!

Her first time before the great unwashed Americana.

Even dubbed, she should be pretty terrific.

I think they get to show it twice. I think I’ll watch it alright. Haha. Maybe I’ll rent it and watch it at the same time, sans commercial breaks.

PS: I’ve never seen it dubbed. Aren’t the voices kind of British-sounding? Be funny is it was a buzzy little Britany Spears type voice.

i was able to watch the dubbed version of CTHD coz my first copy was the VCD version that they sold in video shops here...and then i decided to get the DVD version of it

the dubbing was okay actually. Nope, they didn't have a british or britney sounding dubber for Ziyi. She sounded more like a typical Asian.
at first i thought Ziyi did her own dubbing because her natural voice really sounded like the dubber's. I thought Ziyi knew how to speak english then.

(thank god, they didn't dub it like those old 80s kung-fu movies where the dubbing was so bad...the old Jackie Chan Drunken Master ones were awful!)

Michelle Yeoh did her own dubbing and so did Chow Yun Fat (i think? correct me if i'm wrong)

I once saw a 90 minute dubbed airline version of CTHD on a flight from Denver to Washington. It was laughably stupid. The cast sounded like British comedians. Poor Jiao Long sounded like a spoiled Brittany Spears trying to sound like Princess Di.

I still wanna hurl just thinking about it. I hope this is not the same version I saw on that airplane.

I would much rather see an episode of The Simpson, where Jen of CTHD makes a visit in the town of Springfield..
She is there to fight Bart..

MY naturally sounds a little British...but more Chinese girl British. I’m trying to remember CYF, but can only remember various over-dubbed films.

Hard to believe FOX will do CTHD any kind of service...but maybe the next virgule will come out of trailor park America...after seeing CTHD on FOX...after expecting to see Bart Simpson and having to settle for the real deal bad-girl meal.

Hot damn...regular TV. The only other time was Maybelline ads, and that flash of brilliance in those Apple Computer ads. I also saw ninja Jiao Long a couple of times on the TODAY SHOW.

I know I'm going to flip the channel and hear some strange voice coming from Z's mouth. It's going to ruin my whole night! I never want to watch CTHD dubbed in my life.

But hey, I guess it'll allow some people to watch it... people like my parents! "Why do you like watching those movies? Why do you like reading subtitles?" Those movies?! A movie is a movie no matter where in the world it comes from. And duh! I don't like reading subtitles. Nobody does! If I could understand the native language, I would much prefer that to subtitles and dubbing.

If they enjoy a butchered up voice track, great! I wonder if they're the same people that prefer full screen to widescreen.
*opens mouth to talk-> a second later sound comes out* Whatever floats their boats.

All across America, trailer jockeys who couldn't pronounce Zhang Ziyi for all the beer in Arkansas are going o be exposed to our girl for the very first time.

Hopefully some of them know what Google is and can remember her name - "zang see me" or sump'n like that.

It did get three stars.

They’ve been running some Jack Chan material, and they’re promoting this the same way. Should be an eye-opener for anyone expecting Chan’s shtick, punch-outs, or a kick-em-up. Nobody ever could figger CTHD out.

It was always this...that...or the other kind of thing.

I think it was...Chinese.

Bush will be speaking to the nation tonight at 8:30. I hope they don't interfere with the greatest film of all time! This is one time I have zero interest in what he has to say!

SHADOW
September 7th, 2003, 06:49 PM
He won't be interfering with us on the west side. I doubt Fox is going to do the Bush thing over CTHD because they've also got the season 3 of 24 preview tied in with the CTHD showing. It's funny because the preview is getting more airtime than CTHD! Last week on FX and then today during football, it was all "Watch the world television premiere of CTHD, and meanwhile, catch the exciting season 3 preview to the most thrilling series ever, '24,' starring Keifer Sutherland." hehe it's funny. But that would suck majorly if it did cut in for you. Good luck to you guys on the East Coast!

You should still see it. The dubbing is actually VERY good. Obviously, they can never duplicate Z's unique voice, but she is still the visual eye candy we all remember.

Her voice is too deep and whispery. The real voice is more chirpy, which tends to bind character development as the story unfolds. She sounds too elegant and mature. the "real" Jiao Long was far more petulant sounding.

well you never know... Canada might be more respectful of foreign movies. I'm gonna wait till the very end to so I can hear A Love Before Time in English (they'll probably overdub it with some commercial). I don't know why though since I can listen to it anytime I want...

13 minutes and counting

oh yeah, I saw this college football commercial on ESPN. The cheerleaders were doing the CTHD jumps and getting into the pyramids. Then it cuts to the broadcasters with awe on the faces. And then the cheer coach walks in and he says something in Chinese. Very CTHD-ish.

Dubbed here too. :(

It's just not the same! The girl who did Z's voice sounds so much older. And some of the lines sound rushed... :sigh:

Do you think Michelle did her own dubbing? The woman who did her voice sorta sounds like her...sorta.

BootlegZiyi

I saw the first five minutes and I was saying "how horrible"
Michelle Yeoh probably did her own voice acting, it kind of sounds like her. I don't like Z's voice actor at all, she sounds older and it doesn't fit. The only voice that made me laugh so much was Lo's English voice actor :zbash:

Virg, I have to disagree. I think the English dubbing isn't so great.
Well, it's fine in terms of what's being said, but the voices are just so wrong.
I really couldn't stand it, but my family was watching.

I watched the entire movie in French once (from the DVD), and it was much better than English.
But I might prefer it over the English dubbing because I am so used to the French language.
In any case, nothing beats the original version, and Ziyi's own cute voice.

Bootleg, my little sister was laughing hard too. :D

The story was kinda knocked up...but damn, it was so cool to see Z in action. Been about a year since I saw CTHD and what a warm place it has in me.

I’ve never seen it dubbed...not good, but the story flows really well. Some of the cool stuff was trimmed...too bad.

I was watching the part when JL first steals the GD and marveled at how much fun she was having with Bo and that head-knocker of a weapen. She actually got him to thump himself a couple of times on his noggin with that thing.

She was like a little cat in those fights.

Hahahaha...when Z ran after that horse, she ran like a track star...when she was running away from Lo’s cave...she ran like a ballet dancer running off the stage...very cute.

American TV suks...but tonight...it was really fun.

The scenes where Yu Jiao Long was about to start a barfight with the Southern Crane gangsters was pretty amusing in English, still not good though. I prefer the original, it's funnier that way.

"Do you know of Flying Crane?"
"Peking Duck? I don't eat anything with two feet."

I think that's what I heard.

RE: Z's voice dub...

It is simple. I love Z's voice.

I would rather listen to a thousand words spoken by Z in Mandarin, without understanding a single one, than to hear one word in English by another voice, in her place.

Or something like that.

Z's voice is actually a new form of human communication. It surpasses all understanding to those who do not know the language, but it communicates unmistakably to her fans who can pick her voice out from a billion mandarin speakers.

She can tell me more with a thousand words that I will never understand than all the words in War & Peace. With her squeaks and purrs she is capable of telling us all about herself, with far more content than all the posts on this messageboard combined.

We hear you Ziyi.

CTHD

I think Jiao Long was a knucklehead in that bar fight. She needed a dirty face or something. She must have known somebody would try to beat him/her down at least for being gay. She looked like a pretty cute guy. Haha. Manners, too.

I also noticed that tick above her eye always gave her away when she was pissed or annoyed. Even when she was Jiao ninja.

What she needed was a silk stocking. Works every time.

For once we part company, JarJar. Ziyi needs no English. She is perfect the way she is, and learning English is just going to get in the way of things.

Although we all know she is trying very hard to learn our tongue, I have to tell you, I've had second thoughts about that effort.

Here are the facts. She has all the fans she needs, and all the work she can muster, just the way she is. Ziyi speaking English would be like a dove trying to speak turtle. The words will spit out, but it's not natural. You know she would be struggling, trying like hell to speak like us, and I have to ask you - WHY?

What is it she needs to say in broken English that your heart can't already understand?

If she were standing directly in front of me, trying to speak English, it wouldn't be her. It would be a goddess trying to communicate with me, when the fact of the matter is, it is I who needs to learn her tongue, not the other way around. There is nothing the goddess needs to say to me that her presentation, in full glorious 3D form, isn't already shouting at me.

Hell, Ziyi in 3D is loud, I mean REALLY loud. I'd have to put earplugs on just to keep from going blind. So you see, she could speak English with the eloquence of Shakespeare and I still wouldn't hear a damn thing she says to me anyway. It's hard to listen when your tongue is hanging out.

As for the movies, sub-titles were invented for the goddess.

Ziyi needs to be Ziyi, and I need to understand Mandarin. Barring that, I want to experience her EXACTLY the way she is. If I were blind I could still see her through my ears, and if I were deaf, I could still hear her through my eyes.

Words just get in the way of things.

SHADOW

If she masters English, that's one more thing besides our hearts that she's conquered. Another great accomplishment. There's no reason to doubt her yet. We support her.

That's one of the problems I have with Good Cook Likes Music. She's going to struggle through it, I know it, and I have to ask the damned question once more - WHY?

Are we going to judge her on her ability to speak our way? Who the hell are WE to judge HER! Mandarin is something you sing. English is something you barf.

"Sorry Ziyi, your barf is not good enough?" SHE DOES NOT NEED THAT KIND OF GRIEF!

Please don't take this to be rude guys, but if you want to see her in movies in the U.S. she has to learn more English. You may not like it, but the truth is not many people are in American movies if they can't speak English. I love all of the movies I have seen Z in, and I would like to see a lot more, but I don't have acsess to see movies like Hero and PB like some of you do. My only chance to see her in movies is if she learns English and does some American movies. Just remember that there are some people who don't have the acsess to Z's movies as some others.

And she doesn’t need a bunch of yes-men lap-sitter-wannabes telling her what she wants to hear. She needs to learn english to grow in her career.

English isn’t that beautiful to listen to...but there’s a lot of really cool thinking that’s been done in english...is recorded in english...and can only be appreciated in english.

Also she’s in a position to do something very few of us will ever get to even fantasize about...becoming a respected citizen of the world. A very nice opportunity.

Learning english is a small thing for her...just takes a little time. She can do it. easily. already does.

It doesn't really affect me at all if she does. But I know it will affect her. Perhaps for the better. Perhaps not. She will certainly grow as a person learning English.

But will she be diminished at all by that. Is the return on investment worth it? Will the tiniest trace of her true Z-ness be lost?

If so, than that concerns me. It scares me. More than you know.

In this world, you must be careful what you ask for.

You just might get it.

I contend that she will find a truer form of her trueness. Lay your money down.

You have to have faith and accept that she may outgrow even you. Will you still like her? Of course you will.

There are some tragedies, and people come out with less than they went in with. Won’t happen to her. She has the karma.

Life can sometimes treat you to unexpected hapiness as well. :D

For Ziyi, I think their is more to learning English than just advancing her career. English has become a global language. It is embedded in several different cultures. I can only assume, but it is probable, that Ziyi is eager to learn about other people's cultures, whoever she meets, wherever in the world. Learning English can help break down a barrier that stands between cultures. Mastering the language may not be necessary, but if it pleases her and helps in her personal growth, then all for the better.

And I would not worry about Ziyi being diminished.
She has fortitude, and holds confidence in who she is.
She can be no less beautiful and admirable than you have first witnessed her to be.
