One of the first places I looked up was New Zealand.
New Zealand is on the very corner of the known world!!
THAT EXPLAINS IT.
You can’t be that far from everywhere...without being totally gone. Like The Faulkland Islands of Austrailia. WOW. I had a completely different idea of where New Zealand is. Japan, too!
Where is Old Zealand?

Old Zealand is located somewhere between the ears. I would say near the Isthmus of Delight and the Horn of Plenty, where Frodo is known to frolic.

Okay enough of this nonsense about Z being a cute Orc, Uruk Hai, whatever. The magnificent, dazzling and breathtaking Z looks about as much like an Orc as Michael Jackson looks black.
Ugghhh, I shouldn't have even mentioned Z in the same sentence! My apologies to you your highness if you ever read this! Please accept the humble apologies of your lowly servant.
As for NZ news, Monday night could've been called New Zealand night on the Tonight Show. First TC appeared to promote The Last Samurai filmed in NZ of course. What better place to be Japan. LOL!
And Jay's next guest was Keisha Castle Hughes(Pai) from Whale Rider. Wearing a dress underneath a white sweater, she was a very cute and charming little girl. She's not an Orc either!
Keisha talked about how she was discovered and cast in the movie. There were no clips shown during the interview, but she did mention her impressions of The Grand Canyon after just coming back from a Thanksgiving trip there and the dinner she had while in Arizona. Sorry, can't remember the details there. I think this is her first time in the U.S. About The Canyon, she said she had always heard it was very deep, but had no idea it was as big and wide.
Jay then showed the DVD and said he and his wife loved the movie.
Now I wonder who his first LOTR guest will be. Two weeks and counting folks. The latest issue of Newsweek has a big cover story on it.

What I don't understand is how an establishment rebel - someone who rose to fame by trashing the establishment with as much vigor as they could possibly muster - accepts a trophy that brands him 100% establishment.
The REAL Mick Jagger would have told the Queen where to put her garter. I guess once you reach age 60, nothing you stood for prior means a damned thing anymore.
So much for the Rebel in his old age.
And what idiot decided he even deserved knighthood in the first place. What has the Mick done for British society that in any way has left it better for his efforts - short of increasing British spray paint sales for the purpose of endless graffiti art on London monuments?
Yeah, that's worth knighthood alright. Sir Lancelot must be turning over in his grave.....

Given the code of chivalry as listed in CG's link, here are Mick's qualifications for knighthood:
Courage: The cocaine he was snorting may have been cut with rat poison, but he snorted it anyway. Yeah, that takes a lot of courage.
Justice: His lawyers could always get him off the latest drug charge.
Mercy: Hey, those groupies were really asking for it so I gave it to them.
Generosity: Single handedly keeps the Rolls Royce dealers in business.
Faith: I believe - I'll have another shot of whiskey with my beer.
Nobility: If i wear a codpiece, does that make me noble?
Hope: I hope my next album pays off my yacht at anchor in Capri.
With these noble qualifications firmly entrenched, it is no wonder the Mick is a shining example to humanity of the British code of chivalry, worthy of eminent membership in the Queen's exclusive society of the most noble order of the garter.

I was very happy and pleasantly surprised to hear she made the Best Actress list. Good to know that Whale Rider did get at least SOME well earned attention and credit. Too bad the film itself didn't get nominated. It deserved to be.
I still haven't seen Cold Mountain and it's not because I haven't wanted to. Simply haven't had the time. Haven't had the time to see much anything lately. With all the acclaim over the film however, I was about as stunned as anyone that it wasn't nominated. And an even bigger stunner that Nicole K wasn't nominated.
Keisha should no doubt be stunned herself that she was nominated. Stunned in a good way. Thrilled might be a better word. On the flip side however is the suspense and stress she'll have to endure until February 29th. That can get to anyone, but especially a child actor. She's only 12, or maybe 13 now. Hopefully she won't be too heartbroken if she doesn't win.
If she goes into it with the attitude of just wanting to enjoy the whole Oscar experience and just being there and getting to rub elbows with a lot of stars, and even making some good contacts, she'll enjoy it a lot more. The idea is to go into it assuming someone else will win and applauding whoever does. Less pressure that way.
The fact she was nominated means that her talent has been noticed and appreciated, and that alone can lead to bigger and better things. That by itself is a lot to be thankful for.

I'm glad she's keeping a level head about all this. Hopefully she always will. I also hope she'll never became the self-absorbed primadonna that many celebrities become. Not all of them are, but some. Especially a certain overated singer with a name that sounds a whole lot like the word "primadonna." I wonder who coined that phrase or word, "primadonna."
Perhaps Nostradamus who supposedly predicted a lot of world events and people centuries in advance. Maybe he was thinking of the material girl and arrived at that word. LOL!
But Keisha sounds like a well grounded, modest and level headed person. I wish her the best. If she wins, great! But even if not, sometimes not winning is a blessing in disguise. Because with winning very early in your career, there's a great deal of pressure to follow it up with more and more awards. There are a lot of great actors who were nominated many many times, and didn't win till late in their career.
Keisha should just enjoy the whole thing and if and when it's meant to happen it will.
I also hope that what happens to many child actors will never happen to her. Burnout, substance abuse, etc. Hopefully she'll avoid the pitfalls of Drew Barrymore to name just one of many. But, that may never happen to her, if she's careful and her parents look out for her.

That's so cool!!!
she's an awesome actor and a very level headed girl to boot....
I really hope she pulls the Oscar off... that'd be an astounding way to kick start her career...
either way, she'll take it well... she's a kiwi and we're used to being eaten by bigger fish... never stops our spirit though.

According to the official starwars website, she is definitely in the cast, however, her character is not listed. There are also rumors floating about that she will play Queen of Naboo - which sounds pretty regal to me.

Pete and Fran are all over the front pages of the newspapers today, and there is special bits throughout............
NZ is pretty proud right now
In Middle earth ( wellington) pete and fran are familiar faces,
respect for thier achievments and privacy - very much the nz way
I was surprized to recognise many of the others involved - its kind of like - the oscars seemd to be very close to home.
could have easily been at local venues the "micheal fowler centre" or "state Opera house"
so much work and so many people involved ( seems everyone was a orc at some stage )

I’m not a fan of the stories.
I thought the last film was the best. I could actually follow it. I think all the films were visually stunning. The second best part for me.
I think Smiegal should have been up for best actor. Wait...wasn’t he really Sean Penn? What...then he did win!!! Yeaaaaaa!!! I liked him (even if he was touchy-feely.)
I loved Liv Tyler’s glasses at the Oscars.

she set a trend here straight away with that.
The many faces of Liv, she's cool and the population still view her as royality of newzealand.
Little keisha looked tense throughout the awards.......her carreer has just stated, sort fo a jump start.
The cute one
 will get her oscar, we have only seen the tip of the potential of Ziyi's talent so far.
have to get in now to book that seat next to her...........:D
