this is old news, but i recently came accross this while checking out Maybelline's parent company ( ok, i was on boring banking investment business ) www.lorealusa.com were involved in such cool and positive stuff around the world, i chose this example. I think it could be worthwhile taking shares in these people.

For the second consecutive year, L’Oreal China sponsored the Pingyao International Photography Festival and awarded prizes for Chinese contemporary photography.
L’Oreal China once again demonstrates its commitment to showcasing young artistic talent.

Pingyao, Capital of Chinese Photography

Located south of Beijing, Pingyao, one of the most important cities of ancient China, has hosted the International Photography Festival since 2001. Films, videos, workshops and 150 exhibitions were installed throughout the streets, temples and ancient residences of the city. The festival was designed not only to highlight Chinese talent, but also to create a space where local artists and photographers could meet their counterparts from other countries and create names for themselves on the international cultural scene. The event is becoming one of the photography world’s most important annual gatherings. This year, 3,600 professionals, 80,000 visitors (compared to 14,000 in 2002) and more than 200 Chinese reporters came to Pingyao. Sponsored by L’Oreal, the Contemporary Photography Prizes were among the high points of the festival. A jury of critics and personalities from the Chinese and international art scene selected first, second and third prize winners. This year, first prize went to Ming Hei’s photographs of Shaolin Monks.

Promoting Chinese Artists Throughout the World

The Festival’s Artistic Director, Alain Jullien, was “very pleased with L’Oreal’s renewed support and commitment, which helps us promote Chinese contemporary photography nationally and internationally.” France has designated 2004 as The Year of China and L’Oreal will do its part by sponsoring “Pingyao in Paris” from February 6th to March 28th, 2004. The exhibit will feature works by the six winning photographers from the 2002 and 2003 festivals.

L’Oreal China’s Long-term Commitment to Culture

L’Oreal’s Chinese subsidiary was established in 1997 and has since participated in several major cultural events. In April of that year L’Oreal China sponsored the Guimet Museum’s “From Peking to Versailles” an exhibit highlighting three centuries of Sino-French cultural exchange. The Group’s outpost in The Middle Kingdom also sponsored the Zao Wouki 60-Year Retrospective in 1998 and the Shanghai Art Festival in 2001. Efforts such as these exemplify L’Oreal’s dedication to promoting artistic and cultural exchange between China and France.
